About Us

About Me

Hi, I’m Johanna Kolb, a passionate and experienced maths tutor with over seven years of hands-on teaching experience. I’ve helped hundreds of students succeed in their GCSEs, entrance exams, and 11+ tests — not just by teaching content, but by showing them how to learn smarter, think independently, and build confidence in their abilities.

How It All Began

After completing my own GCSEs at St. James Senior Girls’ School, I realised just how many powerful techniques and learning shortcuts go untaught in traditional classrooms. While helping my classmates, I constantly heard:

“Why didn’t my teacher explain it like that?”

This inspired me to launch my own GCSE Maths clinic while still in sixth form at age 17. That peer-led project opened my eyes to the transformative power of education and ignited my commitment to teaching.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe maths doesn’t need to be loved – just clearly understood. That belief guides my approach to every lesson:

  • Breaking down complex ideas without dumbing them down
  • Sharing proven exam strategies and tips
  • Creating a calm, supportive space where students feel safe to ask questions

Whether a student needs to secure a pass or achieve a top grade, I personalise every lesson to support their unique learning journey. My goal is to build not just knowledge, but lasting confidence.

Experience That Makes a Difference

Over the years, I’ve worked with students aged 4 to 20, covering a wide academic spectrum:

  • GCSEs, 11+, 13+, and school entrance exams
  • High-achieving students preparing for UKMT and Olympiad-level competitions
  • Students with learning differences like dyslexia, ADHD, and processing difficulties

I’ve taught independently and through respected organisations like Tutor Doctor and Maths Mastery Academy, earning excellent parent feedback.

My responsibilities have included:

  • Designing and delivering custom lesson plans
  • Managing client communication and scheduling
  • Teaching advanced maths topics such as combinatorics, number theory, and logical reasoning

This breadth of experience has taught me how to tailor learning so it genuinely sticks — making education feel approachable and empowering.

Beyond Maths

Although maths is my core subject, I also regularly tutor:

  • English
  • Science (GCSE level)
  • History & Geography
  • Study skills, revision strategies, and interview preparation

I take a holistic approach to tutoring, supporting students academically while also building skills in focus, time management, and self-belief.

  • AS Level Physics (A)
